Types of Businesses

An organization that is designed to provide services or goods to consumers is referred to as a business. Capitalist economies have the greatest number of business and many of them have private ownership and are designed to earn a profit so their owners can increase in wealth.  Businesses can also be state owned or be not-for-profit organizations.  A company is traditionally a business that is owned by more than one person. There are typically three usages for the word “business” which are:

  • All activity by a group suppliers of services and goods (broadest meaning)
  • A particular organization (singular usage)
  • Market sector (general usage)The precise definition of the term business is typically a question of complexity and debate of meanings.

There are several forms of business ownership which include:

  • A sole proprietorship- A business that is owned by one individual which is also a for-profit proprietorship is referred to as a sole proprietorship.  A business owner may employ others or they may choose to run the business on their own. The sole proprietor has a limited amount of liability for the debts have been incurred by the business.
  • A Partnership-This type of business is owned by 2 or more individuals and is also a for-profit business. In most cases with partnerships in business, every partner has their own  liability  that is unlimited for business debits that have sustained. The major types of partnerships include limited liability partnerships, limited partnerships, and general partnerships.
  • A Corporation- Members in this type of business have a separate legal personality. A corporation is also referred to as a limited liability that can either be government owned or private owned and the private owned organization may be able to organize not-for-profit or for-profit.
  • A Cooperative-This type of business has limited liability and is often referred to as “co-op”.  This business can organize not-for-profit or for-profit.  Cooperatives usually have classification of either worker cooperatives or consumer cooperatives.
